Welcome to Outlook Express Tutorial, a complete and easy to understand guide to this very popular email client. Setting up Outlook Express can be a daunting task for someone that is less then a computer techie, but don't worry, that's why I wrote this webpage, so everyone can understand how to do the basic tasks of emailing. Just click on the tutorial button at the top of this page to be taken to the tutorial page (see how easy I explain things!). I've included pictures with all my explanations so you can easily understand the lessons.
Outlook and Outlook Express are two different programs. I'm still trying to wonder why Microsoft would name these programs almost exactly the same. They are different, Outlook Express comes free with Internet Explorer and Outlook usually comes bundled in the Office suite of programs. While they have some similar functions they are different programs. You might be able to apply the lessons you learn here to Outlook, but the graphics and some of the steps will be different.
There are a few things that I want you to do before you get started with tutorials. These basic steps will save you so many future computer problems.
- First, don't download any attachments from senders you don't know or files that you haven't requested. Email is the primary way people get viruses on their computer. This one simple step of not downloading attached files from people you don't know will save you so much time and trouble in the future. Even if a friend sends you a file that they don't tell you that their sending, don't open it, because some viruses auto-sends from other people's computers. So if your friend got infected with a virus he/she might pass it on to you without knowing it. So file attachments, unless you're 100% sure of what they are, should not be open!
- Get an Anti-Virus program. Don't worry you don't have to spend lots of money, how does free sound? Yes, one of the best Anti-Virus programs out there happens to be free. You can download AVG Antivirus by Grisoft here. This program will scan email attachments and will stop them before they infect your system.
Those are the two basic rules that I'll tell you before you start using any email program. These two simple steps will save you a lot of heartache in the future.
