Notes on a diatonic harmonica will follow the notes for the particular key of the harmonica you're playing. Most beginners should begin with a Key of C Diatonic harmonica. Almost all harmonica's have the holes with a number label above them, 1-10 on the standard diatonic harmonica. Here is the basic notation chart for a Key of C harmonica
You'll notice that there are some notes missing. On the bottom 3 you'll notice that it the note G is played twice, both on the draw of hole 2 and the blow on hole 3...this is done for certain chords you can play, but it won't be discussed in this lesson. The main section of 4-9 contains the complete scale of the key of C. You'll notice that there aren't sharps and flats present, you can sharpen or flatten a note by bending and will be discussed in another lesson on this website. Most harmonica music is written in a tablature form and you'll never really need to know the notes that's being played, but you should take the time to understand what notes you're playing...also will help you if you know how to read sheet music and want to play a song on the harp using standard sheet music. |
