White Bread
2 env. dry yeast
½ c. warm water
1 tsp. sugar
2 ¼ c. lukewarm water
3 T. sugar
1 T. salt
2 T. Crisco
7 to 7 ½ c. flour
1 egg
1 tsp. water
Sesame or poppy seeds
Dissolve yeast in mixture of ½ cup warm water and 1 teaspoon sugar.
Stir well and let stand about 5 minutes. Mix
together water, sugar and salt in large bowl. Add dissolved yeast
and Crisco. Gradually add flour to make a nice dough.
Knead 5 to 8 minutes. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning dough
so top is greased. Cover and let rise until double,
about 2 hours.
Punch dough down and pull edges into center and turn over in bowl.
Divide dough into 2 portions. Let rest for 5 minutes.
Shape each portion into a loaf. Place in greased loaf pans, sealed
edge down. Cover and let rise for 1 hour. Brush top
with beaten egg which has been mixed with 1 teaspoon water. Sprinkle
with sesame or poppy seeds. Bake at 375
degrees for 25 to 30 minutes in two 5x9x3-inch pans.
