Exercising Your Dog By Jackie Jones

Exercising your dog is an important part of making them healthy and happy, but also knowing what's right for you dog is also important.  Larger breed dogs like retrievers, collies, grey hounds, and many of the large breed dogs are well suited for distance exercise, so taking them for a jog is a good idea, as long as the dog is healthy and has no medical conditions.  Also, dogs are just like any other animal, they will build up an endurance and get up to a healthy stage.  So, don't make that sedentary doggie into an athlete in one day, it just won't happen.

Another important fact is knowing your dog.  Little dogs aren't meant to go on jogs...long distance exercise with a little dog is just a bad idea, they can't handle it, they have short little legs, and aren't made for that type of activity.  Keep jogging with your dog for the larger breeds.

Also, thinking your dog gets enough exercise by being in the yard is a popular misconception.  Most dogs left a lone in a yard won't get enough exercise and will feel bored.  So, taking your dog for a walk is a great idea.  Smaller breed dogs or toy sized dogs, only need to go for 1/2 mile walk a day.  Some of the larger breed dogs might need up to 8 miles of walking a day.

Its a good idea to contact your vet and ask them what a good amount of play time or walking is right for the specific breed you own (p.s. it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to ask your human doctor what you're capable of).  So, have fun, play with your dog, and make your doggie very happy and also healthy in the process.
