Why The Diet Industry Wants You to Stay Fat!

So, why do they want you to stay fat?  There is only one good reason why any diet company is in business at the moment, to make money, and if their clientele succeeds, then their company would be shut down because they would no longer be fat.  The diet industry made billions last year and the year before that, and the year before that, yet, the population is getting fatter and fatter.  What's wrong with this picture?  If we're spending money on all these diet plans and these diet plans are suppose to work, why wouldn't we be getting thinner as a population and not fatter?

To answer that question you have to look at what all these diet companies want from you.  There are three basic types of diet companies and their business models are as follows:

  • Diet companies that want to enslave you into buying frozen meals for life from them
  • Diet companies that make fantastic claims but have no research to back them up
  • Exercise companies that offer a "quick fix" no effort workout, yeah right
  • Diet companies that are actually good for people (there is one that I like)

There are companies that put you on their meal plan, while this may work wonderfully, it's not really realistic to say that for the rest of your life you'll eat specially packaged meals.  First off, it's cost prohibitive, so when people lose the weight, they'll think, "Okay, I'm thin now, I can eat regular foods." but these programs don't teach you how to have a lifestyle change, they teach you to eat these little packaged meals that cost more money than anything you could buy in the store.

Diet companies that promote pills, want you to use these diet pills forever, and medical research on most if not all of the current dietary pills are sketchy at best.  Just because they say it works on TV doesn't make it so, and the medical side effects of these pills are unknown.  Just remember Fen-Phen in all its glory...trust me, you don't want to try unproven, undocumented, unresearched pills!

Exercise equipment is great, but only if they're truthful in what they say.  Working out enough to lose weight isn't going to happen by sitting on the couch with some machine that electronically pulses your stomach muscles, ugh, get real.  Another thing, they don't mention, and most people won't read in the warnings...please read the warning on that electric AB thing you bought, you might be amazed at the warnings.

Some exercise equipment companies are good and they offer some good products and those companies should be applauded for putting out equipment that people will be able to get in shape on...I think it annoys me that they might make it seem so easy to get in shape...it takes time, it takes dedication...always remember that.

Finally, there are companies that I do like and would recommend.  One I happen to like Weight Watchers, even though they have a meal plan, their point system teaches a person to eat responsibly and make choices about what they should eat during the day.  (Note: I'm not paid or endorsed by the Weight Watchers company)

My most basic complaint about diet companies and the diet industry is, they're not really concerned if you lose weight, they're concerned with the bottom line and the health of the consumer is almost an afterthought.  They push dreams, they push unrealities, and they're making people fatter, because when you fail on a diet, you almost always gain more weight than you started out at and the cycle stays the same, lose weight, go to another company, spend more money, get thin, and then get fatter.  That's what the diet industry is all about.
