The First Christmas Tree
The tradition of the first Christmas
trees come from the Alsace region in France. They were first
set up in the town square. Pageants took place in front of
churches on Christmas Eve. People danced around the tree of
Eden symbolized by a pine tree decorated with apples.
Soon the Christmas tree tradition was carried rapidly out of Alsace
by merchants who traveled from town to town. At first, the
tree was hung from the ceiling with an apple attached to its trunk.
Later, people started to put their Christmas trees in tubs full
of sand. Parents would shake the trees to make small cookies
and toys fall out of them. |
